1)Eid Al-Fitr
The introduction of fasting in the month of Ramadan began from 2 A.H. Eid in
Islam is not only celebration but that Muslims should devote this day to worship and plead
Allah to accept their deeds and forgive their sins. On this day, the doors of
Allah's pardon are kept open with his bountiful blessings.
Fitra is obligatory to anyone who can afford it and it is a sin not to give
it. Fitra depends on major items of food consumed by a person during the year.
These may be rice, wheat, barley, dates, etc. Fitra should be three kilogram per
person. It is also accepted to pay cash replacing these foods. It is
obligatory for the head of the family to give Fitra of all persons (including servants of
both genders of any status) that take food in his house. Fitra must be given
even for the infant who fed only on milk. If a guest, Muslim of non-Muslim arrives
at one's house before the night of Eid Al-Fitr and dines with the host, it is compulsory
to give Fitra on that guest. If the guest arrives after sunset of the night of Eid
Al-Fitr, Fitra is not obligatory even if he dines with the host. Even if the guest
arrives before sunset and does not dine, it obligatory on the host to pay. In this
case, it is better if both the host and the guest pay Fitra. If one's wife is at her
parents' house on the night of Eid Al-Fitr, then they pay for her. On the last day
of Ramadan a person makes a Majlis which finisher after sunset, and he offers food to his
guests, he does not pay Fitr for them. Fitra is given to deserving Momins those who
do not have enough income to support his family of the whole year. Fitra can not be
given to the person one depends on. It is better to give to independent deserving
relatives, then next are deserving neighbors and then orphans, widows, and other pious
people. Fitra from Syeds can be given to Syeds or non-Syeds; but non-Syeds cannot
give Fitra to Syeds. If deserving people are not present in the area, Fitra should
be sent to places where these people are found. Also it may be sent to a Mujtahid
who distribute the amount properly. It is not necessary for the person receiving the
Fitra be just (Aadil) but it is essential to ensure that the Fitra will not be used in
ways of sin such as gambling and liquor. It is preferable to distribute the Fitra in
the local area but it is permissible to send the Fitra to another place. Fitra must
be given between the night of the Eid-al-Fitr to the noon of the Eid. If for some
reason it is not possible to give Fitra at this time, it should be set aside from the rest
of the person's money so later it may be distributed when deserving people are available
or be sent to a Mujtahid.
Sayings about Eid Al-Fitir
-"This night is as important as that of Shab-e-Qadr (Night of Power)." Imam
Sajad
-"One who offers six 'Rakat' prayers on this night reciting in each Rakat sura
Al-Fatiha once and Surah Al-Iklas five times, God will pardon his sins." Prophet
Mohammed (P)
2) Eid-Al-Adha
"Adha" literally means sheep, goats or cattle offered in sacrifice.
All Muslims should celebrate by sacrificing cattle and this day has been determined by
Allah to rejoice. This Eid is linked to the incident of the sacrifice of Ismail by
his father Prophet Ibrahim. About two thousand seven hundred and 93 years before the
migration (Hijrat) of Prophet Mohammed (p.b.u.h). With Allah command, Prophet
Ibrahim let Syria towards Mecca with his wife Hagar and his infant son Ismail. Mecca
at that time was a barren desert with no water or food for miles. In seeing this,
prophet Ibrahim prayed to Allah:
"O our Lord! Surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley
unproductive of fruit near Thy Sacred House. Our Lord! may they keep up
prayer: therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them and provide them
with fruits, happily they may be grateful." (Surat Ibrahim verse 37).
After this prayer he left them and went back to Syria. Hagar settled until all the
water she had was finished. She climbed the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times
without stopping hoping to find water for her thirsty baby. Without any luck she
returned to her son finding beneath his feet gushing water. With joy she cried
"This is Zamzam" and thanked Allah. A tribe known as Jurhum noticed that
birds were circling around area indicating that water was near. They followed the
birds finding Hagar and her baby around the fountain. With the permission of Hagar
they settled at a place called "Arafat". Prophet Ibrahim came to visit and
was delighted to see the tribe encamped and approved of their stay. The tribe grew
very fond of Prophet Ismail and presented him with gifts of sheep; by the time he was
mature he owned a large number of sheep. Imam Jafar-e-Sadiq narrated that one day
Prophet Ibrahim was in Mashar-al-Haram with Hagar and Ismail. That night he had a
dream that he was slaughtering his son Ismail. As a command of Allah he prepared to
fulfill this deed. He approached his son and said, "O my son! O my
son! surely I have seen in a dram that I am sacrificing you; consider then what you
see (what is your opinion)." Ismail said, "O my father, do what you are
commanded; if Allah pleases, you will find me among the patient ones." (Surat
Saffat: verse 102) After hearing this he took a knife and his son to a place known
as "Mana".
"So when they both submitted (prepared for sacrifice) he (father) threw him
(son) down upon his forehead." (Sura Saffat: verse 103)
Then Prophet Ibrahim moved the knife across Ismail's neck. At that moment Angel
Gabriel replaced Ismail with a sheep and Allah said:
"O Ibrahim! you have indeed materialized your dream; surely thus do we
reward the doers of good. Most surely this is a manifest trial. And we
ransomed him with a great sacrifice. And we perpetuated (praised) him among the
later generation." Sura Saffat: 104 -108)
Prophet Ibrahim took off the mask from his eyes and found Ismail standing and a
slaughtered sheep on the ground. He prostrated gratefully to Allah and took Ismail
to the Kaaba. This devotion of worship by Prophet Ibrahim was such a great pleasure
of Allah that he ordered all Muslims to commemorate this act till dooms-day.
Eid Al-Ghadeer
On the 18th of Thilhajj at Ghadeer-Khum, the Holy Prophet made his final message to
complete his succession. In Arabic the word "Ghadeer" means a pond and
Khum is the name of this pond in the desert called "sahra-e-Hujfah". It is
a known tradition that all the prophets appointed their successors by Allah's will without
the approval of the followers. But the leadership became a controversy among Prophet
Mohammed's followers even though he declared many time that Imam Ali was the successor.
Sayings about Eid Al-Ghadeer
- "'(Imam Ali is) My brother and successor', 'The door of the City of Knowledge', 'The most equitable Judge', 'The embodiment of Faith', (having the same position with regard to him as) 'Aaron had to Moses'" Prophet Mohammed (P).
Eid Al-Mubahala
In the 9th year after Hijrah, Prophet Mohammed sent a letter to the Christians of
Najran inviting them to accept Islam. As their response, the Christians sent
fourteen representatives to study the facts of Islam. After discussion and disputes,
the Christians declared "Mubahala". This word is taken from the Arabic
root "Bahlah" meaning curse. So the word means to curse each other.
From both sides they were to bring their closest kin and friends to pray to Allah to curse
the other. On the 24th Zilhajj Prophet Mohammed left his house with Imam Ali,
Hassan, Hussain, and his daughter Fatima. With the Holly Prophet they prayed to
Allah. When the Christians saw who the Prophet brought, they refrained from the
"Mubahala". The Prophet gave them two choices: accepting Islam as
their religion or come to certain terms. They agreed to certain terms such as
signing a peace treaty and paying an annual fee.
Mubahala was important for five reasons:
1) It showed the Christians of Arabia that Prophet Mohammed was not a man to compete
with.
2) Mubahala was an order from Allah that the Prophet take his Ahlul-Bait. This
event shows how the commands of Allah are not altered.
3) The positions of Imam Ali, Hassan, and Hussain and Fatima (p) could no longer be
argued.
4) Although Imam Hassan and Hussain were very young, it proved to the people that
age makes no difference in being infallible (Masoom).
5) In choosing a few to join him in the event, Prophet Mohammed elevated their
status.
Sayings about Eid Al-Mubahala
Prayer
The niyat (intention) is: "I offer two rakat prayer of I'd-al-Fitir,
Sunnat Qurbatan Ellallah." This prayer is offered both in I'd-al-Fitir and in
I'd-al-Adha.
